The 2017 Gruaud Larose is medium to deep garnet-purple in colour. Medium-bodied, the palate is juicy and expressive, with a fine-grained texture and seamless freshness, finishing with a spicy lift.

The 2018 Gattinara Valferana is explosive right out of the glass. Supporting veins of tannin carry a core of red fruit, cinnamon, rose petals, blood orange, mint, and white pepper. The Valferana is complex and wonderfully deep from start to finish. It is the cooler of the two single-vineyard Gattinaras bottled separately here. The 2018 is a special wine.

The 2020 Pavie Macquin is sensational. Rich, dark and explosive, the 2020 balances the natural richness that is such a signature of the estate with a level of energy and vibrancy I have not seen here recently. The result is a towering, imposing Pavie Macquin that hugely delivers. In this vintage, Regisseur Nicolas Thienpont did not use the Cabernet Sauvignon, so the blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with the Franc lending aromatic presence, energy and depth. I like both the purity and the detail here.

2010 Volnay “Taillepieds”: Compared to the nose of the Pictures, where the fruit is redder and cooler and, as one would typically expect, even more mineral-infused. This stony character continues onto the racy, intense, satin-textured flavours that enjoy plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract on the energetic, tension-filled finish that displays the classic austerity of a young Taillepieds. In a word, impressive.

2011 Volnay “Mitans”: (from Mitans proper, not l’Ormeau). Here, the nose is sufficiently reduced that it is hard to read, though the underlying fruit appears ripe. There is a supremely elegant mouth feel to the silky and lacy flavours that dance across the palate before culminating in an ultra-pure, long, and well-balanced finish. This is one very classy effort that is textbook Mitans.

An extraordinarily spicy and complex nose evidences cool, fresh and admirably pure cassis, red berries and plum aromas. A floral note on the remarkably rich, concentrated, extract-rich flavours coats the palate on the dusty, long, and impressively deep finish. It's a classic Bèze and well worth considering.

There is fine richness and good detail to the relatively full-bodied and muscular flavours shaped by a markedly firm tannic spine on the mineral-driven and youthfully austere finale. Terrific.

A restrained mix of floral elements combined with notes of plum and dark raspberry, all of which are trimmed in subtle wood. There is solid size, weight, and volume to the tautly muscular flavours that possess excellent mid-palate concentration, plenty of power on the mouth coating, and a balanced and beautifully persistent finish. This is impressive but will require at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring first and should reward 12 to 15.
